Jamie Morgan is the iconic British photographer who gained recognition for his work with the groundbreaking Buffalo collective. Morgan co-founded Buffalo along with legendary stylist Ray Petri, a group of like-minded creatives whose images are said to have changed the nature of modern fashion photography. Buffalo had a major exhibition at the V&A Museum, accompanied by the release of the heavily referenced ‘Buffalo’ book.
“ Buffalo and Morgan was the most successful and influential image creators of their generation… defining the look of an entire era…Buffalo tested the limits of fashion imagery using models of all races and mixing couture with street at a time when it was unheard of, hence a new style was born and still dominates to this day.”
Dazed and Confused.
Morgan’s work can be characterized as contemporary portraiture. Inspired by classicism yet utterly modern in his choice of casting, cultural comment and fashion interpretation. Each image is a graphic statement. Though modern in feel are also timeless.
There are many general themes running throughout the work and yet each image has it’s own narrative. His images often play with the mixing of gender and race, with street and high fashion, with young and old. They are simultaneously romantic and aspirational while remaining edgy and street credible, defining an image style - this is what gives these images their iconic status.
“Morgan’s work is as much about character as it is fashion, about attitude and values that are timeless and universal beyond trends…yet his work is fearlessly modern and trend setting”
Morgan naturally progressed into filmmaking and has shot many celebrated music videos and fashion films. He has also directed three feature length documentaries and won an award at Robert De Niro’s Tribeca film festival.
He has always been involved in music having released two solo Albums and co-writing Neneh Cherry’s Number one hit “Buffalo Stance”. His passion for music has informed his film work and continues to be an integral part of his film narratives.
He continues to work as a top photographer and filmmaker, shooting for high-end fashion magazines likes Pop, Arena Homme+, Dazed and Confused, i-D Magazine, Vogue and Carine Roitfeld's CR fashion book; while also shooting commercial work for brands and working on personal projects.
